Training Description

The training provides a general overview of energy modeling, including the following:

  • The history of whole building simulation and the underlying building science

  • Applications of energy modeling, including:

    • modeling as a design tool for new construction;

    • modeling in support of energy audits;

    • LEED certification;

    • participation in energy efficiency incentive programs and other programs for green buildings;

    • energy code compliance

  • Modeling protocols of ASHRAE Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings

The training includes real life examples to illustrate the value of energy modeling. Attendees are engaged through multiple quizzes followed by group discussion of the answers. Attendees do not need to bring a laptop to the training.

Target Audience

The training targets building industry professionals who would like to learn more about energy modeling but do not plan to perform it themselves and those who do intend to perform the energy modeling but are new to the field and want to establish a foundation for further study. The training is of interest to design professionals including architects and engineers, building code officials, property owners, property managers, administrators of modeling-based incentive programs, professionals helping municipalities establish local energy codes, and LEED Accredited Professionals. This introductory course does not involve hands-on energy modeling exercises..


Two years of experience in building design, operation, maintenance, or related fields, or equivalent education.

Learning Objectives

  • Name the common applications of energy modeling and describe each application

  • Describe the benefits of whole building energy simulation for new and existing buildings

  • Discuss key differences between energy modeling for new construction and existing buildings

  • Identify the modeling protocols of ASHRAE 90.1 and describe how they are used

  • Describe the process of developing building energy simulations, including key inputs and outputs

  • List several different simulation tools available on the market
