This training explains how energy modeling can be integrated into the building design process to support design decisions and performance-based compliance with the 2025 New York State Energy Conservation Construction Code. The course uses the framework of ANSI/ASHRAE/IBPSA Standard 209-2024, Building Performance Simulation Process, to illustrate how energy modeling evolves from early conceptual design through construction documents and how modeling can inform decisions while design options are still flexible.
Key topics include establishing project performance goals, benchmarking, load reduction, HVAC system selection, design refinement, system integration and optimization, and evaluation of design alternatives. Examples illustrate how energy modeling can inform decisions related to the building envelope, ventilation, HVAC systems, lighting and internal loads, service water heating, and controls, including interactions among these systems and their effects on building performance and compliance.
The training also highlights 2025 New York State Energy Code provisions that can affect performance-based compliance outcomes, including envelope trade-off limitations, renewable energy requirements, ventilation and energy recovery requirements, electric-resistance heating limitations, thermal bridging, and the effect of energy source and the selected compliance metric. The course concludes with high-performance design case studies for multifamily, hotel, office, and school buildings, along with quizzes and examples that reinforce practical application of the design-process concepts.
