101: Introduction to Performance-based Code Compliance for Commercial and Multifamily Buildings
This introductory course provides a practical overview of energy modeling and performance-based compliance under the 2025 New York State Energy Code. Participants will learn the basic concepts behind energy simulation, how modeling software and calculation engines are used, and where performance-based options fit within the overall compliance landscape. The course introduces the principal whole-building performance paths, including C407, ASHRAE 90.1 Section 12, and Appendix G, as well as the component- and system-level approaches in Appendix C, Appendix L, and C409 TSPR. It also addresses why a project may choose a performance-based approach, the role of mandatory requirements and performance backstops, documentation and software requirements, and the use of modeling for selected energy credits. Designed for participants with limited experience in performance-based compliance, the course emphasizes the purpose, structure, and practical application of each approach rather than detailed modeling procedures. It provides the foundation needed for more advanced 100- and 200-level training on specific performance methods and modeling requirements.
